Cheryl McCann-Smithson
Hello, I’m Cheryl, a dedicated Play Therapist with a strong commitment to helping children navigate their worlds and process trauma through play and art. Growing up with a deep love for animals and a connection to nature, I’ve always appreciated the powerful role that creativity, care, and the natural world can play in emotional healing. My therapeutic work allows me to bring these interests together, offering children a safe and nurturing space to explore their emotions and build resilience.
My journey started with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work. Over the past 18 years, I’ve gained extensive experience working with children in various roles, including as a child care Social Worker, founder of a therapeutic play service at Quarriers, and through freelance positions with organisations such as Govan HELP, Brightest Star in Linwood, With Kids, and St Margaret’s Adoption and Family Care Society.

As a member of the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT), I adhere to its ethical framework and maintain a child-centred approach in all my work. I have a broad range of expertise in supporting children dealing with challenges such as sexual abuse, neglect, attachment difficulties, ADHD, Autism, separation, loss, and complex needs.

My approach is grounded in ethical practice, reflective communication, and respect for each child’s unique experiences. By integrating my love for animals, nature, and the arts, I aim to create a therapeutic environment where children can feel supported and empowered to discover their inner strengths.
