The Alaria Story

Where therapeutic care and the natural world come together

At Alaria CIC, we believe nature holds the power to calm, nurture, and reconnect us – especially in a world where many children and young people feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or disconnected. What began with Heather and Cheryl’s shared vision has grown into a thriving community of practitioners, volunteers, and therapy animals – all rooted in respect for nature, an honouring of neurodivergent perspectives, and nurturing care.

We founded Alaria to create something different: a gentle, welcoming space where children, young people, families, and professionals can experience real, meaningful connection, supported by the rhythms of the natural world.

Why We Exist

Many families come to us after feeling lost in long waiting lists, rigid systems, or services that don’t quite fit. We offer a softer, more human alternative – rooted in nature, guided by play, and attuned to each person’s unique needs.

Who We Are

Our team brings together a rich mix of therapeutic, educational, and outdoor skills, rooted in warmth, inclusivity, and respect for nature.

Our founders are qualified therapists, Forest School Leaders, and educators, with specialist training in areas such as play therapy, animal-assisted play therapy, and nature-based therapeutic approaches.

Alongside them, our wider team of staff and volunteers bring skills in outdoor learning, bushcraft, ecological practice, and therapeutic group work. Together, we hold safe, nurturing spaces where children, young people, and families can reconnect and grow.

Our site is at High Plewlands Farm, next to Glengavel Reservoir – a space that offers woodland, meadow, water, and shelter, allowing us to work gently with the seasons and the landscape.

Our Values

At the heart of Alaria CIC are our core values:

Connection: Building strong, trusting relationships with individuals, families, and communities.

Inclusivity: Creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and supported.

Empowerment: Supporting people to discover their inner strength and potential.

Sustainability: Respecting the environment and nurturing a deep appreciation for nature.

Why Donations Matter

Supporting Accessible Therapeutic Spaces
Alaria CIC is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company. Every penny we receive goes back into our work – helping us create safe, nurturing outdoor spaces for children, young people, and families.

Your donations help us:

  • Provide additional resources for our sessions – things like craft materials, sensory tools, and seasonal equipment.

  • Subsidise places for families who might otherwise struggle to access therapeutic support, through our accessible contribution scheme.

  • Sustain and grow our nature-based therapeutic services so we can reach more families and communities in need.

We deeply appreciate the kindness of those who choose to support us it helps ensure our services remain inclusive, gentle, and community-focused.
